About Layout Duels
One developer, one stubborn idea about chess, and an arena built around it.
The one idea
Every game of chess you have ever played began from the same 32 pieces on the same 32 squares. Centuries of study have been poured into those opening moves, and if your opponent has memorized more of that library than you have, you are behind before you think for yourself.
Layout Duels deletes that advantage. Before the battle you step into the Forge and build your own starting position: 16 pieces, exactly one King, placed across ranks 1 through 4. Stack your queenside, wall your King in behind pawns, or spread a skirmish line and dare someone to break it. Your opponent forges theirs the same way. When the board appears, no memorized opening exists for the position in front of you. Every move after that is ordinary chess, validated by the rules it always had.
How the Arena fights
Three minutes each, no increment, and your clock only runs on your turn. First strike is decided at random. There are no draws: stalemate counts as a loss for the fighter who caused it, so someone always walks out a champion. Seek a ranked opponent in the Arena, challenge a friend directly, climb the Gauntlet ladder of 28 named AI warriors, or enter the Eternal Trial, where a freshly forged opponent is always waiting and you never queue. Ranked victories carry you up twelve ranks from Rookie to Arena Legend, earn followers who stay yours for life, and put your name in the Champion Hall or the Hall of Trials.
Why it exists
Because the idea would not leave. The first stone was laid in November 2025, and Layout Duels is built and run by a single developer in New Jersey. There is no studio behind it and no publisher setting the schedule. Player feedback shapes what gets built next. The Arena Chronicle keeps the record of what changed and why.
What costs money, and what never will
Playing costs nothing. Every mode, every ladder, and every hall is free in any modern browser, with nothing to download. Fighters on the free tier see banner ads. The optional Noble and Royal tiers remove those ads and add cosmetic prestige: auras, profile frames, defeat animations, and private board skins. They never grant rating boosts, matchmaking favors, stronger pieces, or in-game information. Skill decides duels here. The day money decides one, the Arena has failed.
Reach the Arena
Bugs, arguments, feature demands, and praise all land in the same place. Write to support@layoutduels.com or open Arena Support. The fighters gather on Discord and on Instagram, and the door is genuinely open. Ask for something and it may well end up in the Chronicle.
